TIMBER SPECIES

Bendee | Brigalow | Gidgee | Grey Ironbark
Lancewood | Red Ironbark | Rosewood | White Cypress

Acacia catenulata

Bendee

Bendee has a very confined distribution to QLD and occupies similar situations and soils to Lancewood (Acacia Shirley). It grows in pure stands on shallow ground, derived from profoundly weathered sandstone.

The Wood is reddish-brown with a contrasting narrow band of sapwood. It has a straight grain and fine texture. Beautiful in colour and grain, Bendee bores quite a few resemblances with Inland Rosewood. It is perfect for turning and is easy to finish. It has a translucent surface characteristic, with the grain becoming silky. The timber is considered as worth promoting for commercial use.

Acacia harpophylla

Brigalow

Medium-sized tree. It has a heartwood that varies from dark reddish-brown to dark brown with thin yellow sapwood. The texture is fine and even, with the grain relatively straight.

Brigalow has been used for mining timbers, small & heavy construction, fence posts and rails, fancy turnery, walking sticks, furniture, heavy axe and tool handles, and fishing rods; and has potential for musical instrument and accessories manufacture, such as fingerboards and bows.

Acacia cambagei

Gidgee

It is also known as Gidyea, stinking wattle or stinking Gidgee because of its specific strong odour when freshly cut. The Wood is characterised by dark brown or dark coffee-coloured heartwood and creamy sapwood; the texture is terrific.

Gidgee is among the hardest and heaviest timbers in the world. Gidgee is widely used as fence posts because of its durability though it is often hard to obtain sound lengths. It also can be used as flooring (almost scratch-resistant), furniture, musical instruments, and handcrafted pieces. The grain is extraordinary against excellent colour contrasts after being polished.

Eucalyptus paniculata

Grey Ironbark

The tree typically grows to a height of 30–50 m, varying from a mahogany-like appearance to dark shades of chocolate. The bark is hard and coarse, with deep furrows and ridges ranging from dark brown to black. The heartwood colour ranges from pale brown to dark chocolate brown or red. With occasional rich, red tones, sapwood is lighter in colour and is 20mm thick on average.

The timber has various uses, including railway sleepers, heavy engineering, construction, poles, and cross-arms.

Acacia shirleyi

Lancewood

The tree is up to 15m tall and straight; the bark is rough, dark, and fissured. It is a hardwood with creamy sapwood and rich reddish-brown heartwood. The texture is fine and relatively straight-grained.

It is unsuitable for fence posts as it tends to rot in the dirt. Given its durability and long straight stems, it is ideal for furniture and rails and was once used by Aboriginal people for tools and weapons.

Eucalyptus crebra

Red Ironbark, narrow-leaved

Medium-sized tree, 15-25m tall. With its exceptional hardness and deeply furrowed, rough bark ranging from a dark grey to a black hue, it is a distinctive group of Australian eucalypts. The heartwood is dark red to red-brown, with a unique, pale yellow sapwood. The texture is fine and even with an interlocked grain.

It has been a preferred structural timber for over 200 years due to its long-term performance in weather-exposed structural applications.

Acacia rhodoxylon

Rosewood

It is commonly known as inland Rosewood or Spear Wattle. The stem and branches are often fluted, and the bark is dark in colour and sheds in curly flakes. The Wood is reddish-brown, heavy, and fragrant.

It is termite-resistant and is widely used for fencing due to its durability in the ground. It is also suitable for furniture, luxury flooring, handles, and musical instruments like guitars.

Callitris glauca

White cypress

It is also known as Australian Cypress or White Cypress Pine. A small-to-medium softwood widely distributed in inland areas of Australia with moderate rainfall. Heartwood colour varies from light tan to darker brown, commonly with darker reddish-brown streaks. The sapwood is typically pale yellow or pinkish. Naturally, small tight knots are present throughout the Wood. The texture is fine and even.

Cypress is very durable in terms of decay and is termite resistant. It is commonly used for veneer, plywood, flooring, furniture, panelling, posts, and other light construction purposes.
